Composite Decking

Composite decking is our material of choice. The combination of beauty, durability, low maintenance, and upcycling give it an excellent value proposition. You can chose from a variety of natural looking wood grain patterns and colours to get just the right look. No need to worry about constant painting or staining as you would with a wood deck. You can rest easy knowing that your deck is backed by a 25-35 year manufacturer's warranty. Our Process

Hiring a deck builder should not be a headache. At Red Cedar Yard Works, our goal is to make the process of building or renovating your deck an enjoyable experience. From start to finish, our customers can expect clear, prompt communication regarding scheduling, project progress, budget, change orders, and any other concerns you may have. We avoid surprises by diligently assessing our projects in the consultation phase so that you know what the project is going to cost with the least uncertainty possible. Here is what to expect when you chose Red Cedar Yard Works for your next project.

Initial Consultation:

  • First, we’ll ask you to fill out the contact form or send us an email. please include the following information.

    • Name, Address, phone number, email address

    • Photos of the deck/outdoor living space in question

    • Rough measurements (if possible, photos should suffice if not)

    • Wishlist of features to be added 

    • Expected project cost

    • Desired Timeline

    • Anything else you would like us to know

  • Let us know when a good time to call is and we’ll be sure to get back to you to discuss the project.

  • When we call we will discuss the general outline of the project, if the budget fits with what you would like to accomplish, and if we’re able to take on the project in the timeframe you are looking for.

In Person Consultation - $75, refundable to the project cost

  • If we are in agreement on a rough outline of the project and estimated budget, then it’s time to schedule an in-person consultation.

  • We will come to your home or site to get to know you better and discuss the project in detail. Over about an hour we will go through all the details of your deck project, including:

  • Assessing the health and integrity of your existing deck or patio

  • Discussing ideas to optimize your outdoor living space

  • Selecting decking products and finishes with provided samples

  • Addressing any concerns you anticipate for the construction period

  • Confirming all measurements and site access

Now We Get to Build!

  • We will arrive at the agreed upon start time and get to work.

  • First we will mitigate any safety hazards and protect any elements of the house which could be damaged during your deck’s construction.

  • We will also identify key work stations and material staging areas and confirm that these locations will work for you.

  • Then we will work through the project and give you regular progress updates.

  • When we have completed the project we will walk through the project with you to confirm that all items on the scope of work have been completed to your satisfaction.

  • After signing the completion of project form, we will send you the final bill along with instructions on how to take care of your deck and warranty information for both our workmanship and the products used in your project.

What makes our decks better built?

Decks are a place where the details really matter. Because it’s outside, and often not covered, your deck has to stand up to harsh winters and hot summers. Here are a few of the details we take care of on every deck to ensure it will stand the test of time.

Pressure treated lumber

  • Every deck frame is built with exclusively pressure treated lumber, with every end cut treated for longevity.

No ground contact

  • Footings are built to about 6” above ground to make sure the posts don't get water damage over time

  • Decks built on-grade utilize concrete sleepers so that there’s always substantial distance between your deck and the ground.

G-Tape

  • We tape the tops of all beams and joists. This ensures there is no direct wood to wood or wood to decking contact, which is the first place rot develops.

Treated lumber approved fasteners

  • All the nails, screws, and fasteners on the job site are approved to be used with pressure treated lumber. This is an important detail as non-approved fasteners corrode quickly in treated lumber and fail, rendering a deck unsafe.

Customization

  • Is there a detail or a feature that is important to you? Just let us know and be assured it will be taken care of properly.

Secure posts

  • If your deck has a railing, we will make sure to go the extra mile to ensure it is safe and secure. There are a few different ways to mount a post, depending on the railing type, but it's a detail we don’t skimp out on.

Clean lines

  • We make sure to carefully plan the decking so that it has the cleanest lines possible. Wherever we can, we will cut the decking in place so it has a perfectly flush edge.

What It Costs

At Red Cedar Yard Works, we like to have open and honest conversations about pricing. We don't beat around the bush and we don't surprise you with a bill bigger than we said it would be. We give you one price up front and make sure everyone is on board with change orders when the scope of work is altered. To help you get a ballpark price, we have put together a series of common deck projects and what they cost. Quality: For us, quality comes first. It requires measured planning, attention to detail, and constant vigilance for errors & defects. This results in projects that are both beautiful and sturdily built. Without overbuilding, we make sure that your deck is strong enough to stand the test of time. We also take the time to make sure every line is straight, square, flush, plum, and trim because at the end of the day, it’s those little details that make a deck shine. 

Sustainability: We live in the age of climate change. Therefore, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to mitigate our environmental impact. Red Cedar Yard Works lives up to that responsibility in a few ways. First, we reduce the amount of materials we have to use. This is done by carefully planning our lumber orders and not letting materials go to waste. Second, We reuse wherever possible. When we re-build decks, we strive to keep as much of the original footings and frame as possible. This keeps the old lumber and concrete out of the landfill and lets the new lumber remain as trees in the ground. Reducing and reusing also keeps your costs down! Finally, we are diligent about recycling. We ensure that all waste products are sorted and disposed of properly. We also build decks with recycled composite materials. We use FibreOn Sanctuary decking because it is made of 95% recycled materials while delivering a high quality product.
